Adding storytelling themes to your classroom

Do you remember how much you enjoyed storytelling as a child? How fascinated you were with the descriptions, the mysteries, the humor, the secrets. At that time you were not aware that storytelling is one of the oldest forms of communication, and you certainly were not aware of how much you were learning.

During your planning time with the youth, find out what types of interests they have regarding storytelling. Have them help in deciding what types of activities they will do during the activity time. On the day the "Storytelling Theme" starts, youth should come into environments that are rich in stories, storytelling and literature. Let’s look at the benefits of including storytelling in the classroom setting.

Story Types

Types of stories include autobiographies, biographies, fairytales, legends, narratives, drama, malodrama, romance and many more. There is a wide variety of areas that can be explored with stories.

Creating stories

In creating personal books, students learn about the power of written communication. When they read their books or stories aloud, they learn about the power of words and how the use of their voices affects what they are trying to communicate. In writing and creating their stories, they learn the importance of word choices to convey meaning and intent.
