TRAVELLING DIARIES
Travelling diaries can be part of storytelling in a classrrom setting. They are interesting materials which can inform students about different cultures and destinations around the world. For students who have travelled, diary telling, reading and writing are excellent ways to give them the opportunity of sharing their experiences. For the students who haven't travelled, travelling diary telling and writing are excellent ways to stimulate their creativity. They may also give them the "travelling bite."
Here is a travelling diary sample written by a future ESL teacher.
Chamonix, France. September 28th 1999.
Wow! what a wonderful day today. I am a little tired because my friend and I decided to climb mount Brévent today. It is a mountain in the heart of Chamonix. Chamonix is a wondeful little city. The people are very welcoming and are always happy to meet us. We are staying in a small campground. The view is wonderful. When we step out of the tent in the morning, all we can see is gigantic mountains surrounding us. The mountains which appear in front of the Mont Brévent are the Mont Blanc district's mountains. The tallest mountain of the district is l'Aiguille du Midi.
Amsterdam, Holland. October 13th 1999.
We arrived in Amsterdam today. It is a beautiful city filled with historical treasures. Amsterdam only has one main road where cars are allowed to pass. The rest of the streets are reserved for walkers or bikers and the tramway. Almost everyone owns a bicycle in Amsterdam. The number of bikes in the city is enormous. The city offers many sites to visit: The Van Gogh museum, Anne Frank's house, many bridges and canals and many shopping areas. If you are lucky like we were, you can also catch the October fair.
Rome, Italy. November 19th 1999.
Today, I visited many beautiful historic structures from the heart of Rome. Some of the most beautiful structures of the city are the fountains. The number of fountains in Rome is increadible. My favorite one is the Fontana de Trevi. The people in Italy are very nice and welcoming. I am lodging in a student hostel not far from the Termini, Rome's trainstation. I can't wait to see St-Peter's Basilica as well as the interior of the Colosseum.
